The Observatório do Pré-sal (PreSalt Watch) is a website that joins a number of initiatives from Ibase (Brazilian Institute of Social and Economic Analysis) along with other social organizations to discuss the mining industry. The objective of the actions is to establish a network, to produce and to
disseminate information on projects and thus encourage forms of social mobilization and social control
of the mining business and mining exploration companies
This website shows a collection of articles, laws, research, studies, documents and sites on a wide
variety of pre-salt and mineral extraction industry. This space, through its Political Committee,
produces news and analysis, discuss current issues in the sector in Latin America and Africa. In Brazil,
the pre-salt exploration and other mining activities result in direct and indirect impacts on populations
and the environment, not only on people living in areas of such ventures, but also on several urban
sectors.
The increasing of the mineral extraction in Brazil and in the world is not sustainable. It reinforces
socioeconomic inequalities and affects the environment. The discussion about a new energy and
alternatives to the current development paradigm is urgent. The Observatório do Pré-sal (PreSalt
Watch) main political goal to contribute to this debate in Brazil.
